Curcumin, which gives turmeric its characteristic yellow color, is also the most active medical component in turmeric. However, other chemicals in turmeric may also have medical activity. Turmeric is mainly exported to Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Africa.
Turmeric is a spice widely used in India in cooking various curries. It has also been used since ancient times as a traditional medicine and also for beauty care treatment. The main use of turmeric juice taken regularly is as a blood purifier.
In the herbal medicine the turmeric is used in beauty care treatment where its juice is applied to the skin as a raw paste, kept for around thirty minutes and then washed off. It has been used as an herbal cosmetic in India since ancient times and is still in use even today throughout the country. It is an essential ingredient of the traditional bathing ritual of Indian marriages where it is applied along with sandal wood paste before the bath. Turmeric use is said to make the skin soft and smooth. It also gives a glow to the skin and produces a fairer complexion. Turmeric is also used in traditional medicine for cuts and burns as it is believed to have an antiseptic effect and also promote healing. Turmeric is used as an excellent natural antibiotic, while at the same time it strengthens digestions and helps improve intestinal flora.
Turmeric is a necessary ingredient of curry powder. It is used extensively in Indian dishes, including lentil and meat dishes, and in Southeast Asian cooking. Turmeric is routinely added to mustard blends and relishes. It also is used in place of saffron to provide color and flavor.
Turmeric contains chemicals that are both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Both these properties may make it useful for treating arthritis, other inflammatory conditions, and possibly cancer. It appears to reduce blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and it may be anti-infective, as well. Its former use in treating respiratory conditions has largely been replaced by more effective agents.
